Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton Killed in Jordan Attack

Pvt. Isabella Gonzales of Carrollton, Texas, was killed in action Friday during an Iranian missile and drone attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, the Pentagon announced Monday, making the 19-year-old the latest North Texas service member lost since the war with Iran began. The Defense Department said Gonzales was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. mission against the Islamic State group, when the base came under fire. Also killed was 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, who died of his injuries the following day, July 18.

Who Was Pvt. Isabella Gonzales of Carrollton

Gonzales was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, based in Ansbach, Germany. Friends told CBS News Texas that Gonzales left for boot camp exactly one year ago and was remembered as outgoing, spontaneous, and someone who loved to dance. Friends who grew up with her said she graduated from Hebron High School roughly a year before her death, and one friend, Misael Galdamez, recalled the disbelief of losing someone who had “just” been laughing together in a room not long ago.

What Happened at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base

The Pentagon said Gonzales was killed in action on Friday, July 17, during an attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, and that 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, was killed in action the following day. Four other U.S. service members were medically evacuated to a hospital in Jordan and have since been discharged, while others were treated for minor injuries. The Department of War said the incident remains under investigation, and additional details about the soldiers’ service are expected in the coming days.

A Second Soldier Lost: 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan

Feehan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Like Gonzales, he was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve at the time of the attack. Their deaths mark the latest losses in a war that has steadily claimed American service members stationed across the Middle East in recent months.

Texas Leaders Mourn Pvt. Isabella Gonzales

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement that Texas mourns the loss of Army Pvt. Isabella Gonzales of Carrollton, killed in action serving the nation in Jordan at just 19 years old, and that her courage and sacrifice represent the very best of Texas. Abbott extended prayers to both the Gonzales and Feehan families. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also issued a statement honoring Gonzales and thanking her for her service.

White House and Pentagon Response

President Trump said on social media that every time Iran kills an American soldier, “they will pay for that killing many times over,” adding that the directive had been passed to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Daniel Caine. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump will attend the soldiers’ dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base, though the exact date and time were still being finalized as of Monday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has separately defended the broader U.S. campaign, saying strikes are aimed at Iranian assets used to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Carrollton Community Remembers Isabella Gonzales

Lewisville ISD said Gonzales walked the halls of Hebron High School not long ago as a student, classmate and friend, and that her decision to serve after graduation “speaks volumes of her character.” The district said it is heartbroken by her loss. Friends have said they intend to honor her memory by continuing to share her story, describing her as someone who never wanted those around her to dwell in sadness.
